How to Make a Tax-Deductible Donation to PTPA

Important Note: To claim your donation as a tax benefit, you must itemize deductions on your federal tax return (Schedule A).

Because the PTPA is not a 501(c)(3) charity, you must donate through our parent organization, the FPUSA, to receive a tax deduction.

Step 1: Write the Check Correctly Do not make the check payable to PTPA.

  • Pay to the order of: "Federation of Pétanque USA"

  • Memo Line: You must write: "Restricted for Port Townsend Petanque Alliance"

  • Optional but Recommended: Include a short note with the check stating the money is a "restricted gift for the Port Townsend Petanque Alliance."

(If donating online, look for a comment or designation box and type: "Restricted for Port Townsend Petanque Alliance".)

Step 2: Save Your Documentation You need proof of the donation before filing your taxes.

  • Donations under $250: A bank record (canceled check or credit card statement) is sufficient.

  • Donations of $250 or more: You must obtain a formal acknowledgment letter from the FPUSA. This letter must verify the amount and state that "no goods or services were provided in exchange."

Attached is FPUSA's donor letter for your records.
